Announcing Bayreuth Baroque 2023

BAYREUTH BAROQUE OPERA FESTIVAL: 07-17 September 2023
For the first time with two staged opera productions and exclusive concerts

The BAYREUTH BAROQUE opera festival presents its fourth edition and will offer two staged opera productions for the first time in autumn 2023. For the opening of the festival, Max Emanuel Cencic (artistic director) will present us his take on Handel’s Flavio, Re de’ Longobardi. A political satire with which the composer took the stereotypes of the heroic opera in his stride, surprising not only the London audience of the time.
Max Emanuel Cencic will stage the production of Flavio and sing the role of Guido alongside with Julia Lezhneva (Emilia), Yuriy Mynenko (Vitige), Remy Bres-Feuillet (Flavio), Sreten Manojlovic (Gismondo) and Fabio Trümpy (Ugone). Benjamin Bayl will conduct Concerto Köln, who are the residence orchestra of the festival 2023.

The second production takes us back to the birth of opera with Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, which is translated into the 21st century with transcriptions, live electronics and partly newly composed music. Rolando Villazón embodies the title role of this exciting new version of L’Orfeo. In its Germany premiere, Markellos Chryssicos will conduct his orchestra Latinatas Nostra.

We’r very much looking forward to welcome you at Bayreuth Baroque 2023 !

Ottone canceled

Max Emanuel Cencic has ruptured a muscle in his leg and, much to his regret, has to cancel the production of OTTONE scheduled at Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe. Healing will take eight weeks and therefore make his participating in the rehearsals and preparations impossible.
Max Emanuel Cencic hopes to be able to return onto stage soon and thanks his Karlsruhe audience for their understanding.

Thank you for being with us at Bayreuth Baroque 2022.
We'll see again at Bayreuth Baroque 2023, from 7 to 17 September 2023.

BAYREUTH BAROQUE 2022 from September 7 to 18

From September 7th -18th, the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival 2022 will take you on a journey into the dazzling world of the Baroque with 16 events at five venues in Bayreuth. The third edition is dedicated to the Roman opera.

The brilliant start is made by the new production of Leonardo Vinci's Alessandro nell’Indie by the artistic director of the opera festival Max Emanuel Cencic - with an all-male cast. In addition, two concertante operas, an oratorio and 13 concerts present the virtuoso Roman baroque repertoire with stars of the international baroque scene like Franco Fagioli, Bruno des Sá, George Petrou, Jeanine De Bique, Julia Lezhneva and many more. The resident orchestra of this year's edition is {oh!} Orkiestra under the musical direction of Martyna Pastuszka.

For the first time in almost 300 years, Vinci's opera Alessandro nell’Indie about Alexander the Great's campaign in India will be heard in its entirety on the first night of the opera festival at Bayreuth's Margravial Opera House. True to the premiere, there is an all-male cast with Franco Fagioli (Poro), Bruno de Sá (Cleofide), Jake Arditti (Erissena), Dennis Orellana (Alessandro), Stefan Sbonnik (Gandarte) and Nicholas Tamagna (Timagene); music is performed by the {oh!} Orkiestra and the choir of the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival under the musical direction of Martyna Pastuszka. Pietro Metastasio's libretto was set to music almost 80 times, and Wilhelmine von Bayreuth also published an opera based on this popular libretto in Erlangen in 1741.

Bayreuth Baroque will present three more theatrical-concert performances in 2022:

The Festa pastorale Il Nascimento dell'aurora (Sept. 15) by the great Venetian melodist Tomaso Albinoni was written to honor Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel on the occasion of her birthday. The plot of the work, which probably premiered in 1711, mixes allegorical, sweet-natured nothingness with allusions to the War of the Spanish Succession.

Giovanni Bononcini's Griselda will be performed in its entirety for the first time since 1733, with recitative texts by Apostolo Zenos newly composed especially by the composer and baroque specialist Dragan Karolić. The dramma per musica tells the story of Gualtiero, King of Sicily, who loves the shepherdess Griselda, which naturally must lead to conflict due to the order of the estates (Sept. 18).

Since opera, as a secular genre, was at the mercy of papal censorship in 17th-century Rome, oratorios of sacred content became the preferred and most successful works in the Papal States. Like Alessandro nell'Indie, the oratorio San Giovanni Battista by the scandal-ridden composer Alessandro Stradella will be performed in a candlelight concert with an all-male cast, modeled on the premiere (Sept. 14).

Other highlights of this year's edition include gala concerts with Bruno de Sá and Il Pomo d'Oro (Sept. 16), Max Emanuel Cencic celebrates 40 years on stage in Bayreuth with Armonia Atenea, last year's resident orchestra (Sept. 10), Jeanine De Bique comes with Concerto Köln (Sept. 8) and Julia Lezhneva will perform with this year's resident orchestra {oh!} Orkiestra (Sept.17).

The program is rounded off by many other concerts at historic locations in Bayreuth, including the dinner concert in the Sun Temple of the Orangery in the Hermitage, which was so popular last year. New this year are candlelight concerts in the city and castle churches and, for the first time, three concerts in the Ordenskirche St. Georgen.

Max Emanuel Cencic receives the Honorary Award of the Deutsche Schallplattenkritik 2021 for Classical Music

The Countertenor Max Emanuel Cencic has been awarded the Honorary Award of the Deutsche Schallplattenkritik 2021 for Classical Music. In 2020, in the midst of the corona crisis, Max Emanuel Cencic and his Bayreuth Baroque Team managed to bring his festival of baroque music in Bayreuth to the stage with an extensive program as planned and without having to cancel a single event. For this, the countertenor who?s now also the festival director was awarded the honorary prize in the "Classical" category by Deutsche Schallplattenkritik on March 11, 2021.

Following is the jury's reasoning under the direction of Manuel Brug:

Usually, one artist receives this honorary award for his »life's work«. In the case of Max Cencic, we are gifted with a multi talented personality.
As a six-year-old, he was already a radiant boy soprano and was singing the powerful aria of the Queen of the Night. After being with the Vienna Boys' Choir, he appeared in George Solti's Magic Flute. Max then changed from soprano to countertenor. As such, he impresses with an extroverted personality in the most difficult roles. He also appears on many CDs that he produced himself from the start. He is director, record producer, agency owner, impresario and recently became artistic director of the Bayreuth Baroque festival. The festival takes place in the glamorously restored Margravial Opera House and is filled with da-capo arias. Here again, Max Emanuel Cencic surprises with excellence and innovation. One prize for all Cencics is more than justified!

Manuel Brug's ceremony for Max Emanuel Cencic can be seen here.

For the remainder of the 2020/21 season, there are still some outstanding projects to come for the countertenor. These include a house debut at the Paris Opera in a new production of Dalbavie's Le Soulier de Satin, the title role in a new production of Hasse's Cajo Fabrizio and Rossini's La Donna del Lago at the Festival in Saaremaa where the artist will sing the challenging role of Malcolm and stage the opera once more. In the summer of 2021, Max Emanuel Cencic will devote himself entirely to the artistic preparations for his Bayreuth Baroque festival that will take place from the 1st to the 14th September 2021. He will stage two opera productions in which he will also perform key roles.

Dear Max Emanuel,
congratulations from your Parnassus team!

Bayreuth Baroque Festival , 1st to 14th September 2021

In 2020, against all the adversities of the corona crisis, the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival was one of the few festivals in Europe that was able to carry out its program as announced. This year, from September 1st to 14th 2021, the festival will present once more some Baroque jewels in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Margravial Opera House.

The first highlight of this year's edition is the revival of Nicola Porpora's opera Carlo il Calvo on September 1st, 3rd and 5th. With Julia Lezhneva, Franco Fagioli, Max Emanuel Cencic, Bruno de Sá and George Petrou, the world-class line-up of the previous year is able to return in this production. The opera was rediscovered and staged by Max Emanuel Cencic. The first edition of the Bayreuth Baroque Festival took place during the first year of the Corona crisis. Huge success for the first edition of the Bayreuth Baroque Festival

With a completely sold out Margravial opera house in Bayreuth and almost 360,000 online viewers worldwide, the first edition of Bayreuth Baroque Festival came to an end last Sunday and exceeded all expectations. From September 3rd to 13th, artistic director Max Emanuel Cencic and international stars of the baroque scene such as Joyce DiDonato, Jordi Savall, Julia Lezhneva, Franco Fagioli, Bruno de Sá and many others presented a festival with a wide-variety program in Bayreuth. The rediscovery of Porpora's opera Carlo il Calvo, directed by Max Emanuel Cencic, which can also be seen at next year’s festival, received international acclaim. The German premiere of Vinci's opera Gismondo, re di Polonia caused a sensation. With a world premiere recording, it recently received the German Record Critics' Prize. The next edition of Bayreuth Baroque will take place in the first half of September 2021.

Max Emanuel Cencic and the entire Bayreuth Baroque festival team are proud and grateful that the originally planned program was able to take place in its entirety with only a few minor changes. In this very difficult year for the culture industry, they have set an important example for all.  Minister of Art Bernd Sibler emphasizes: "The start of Bayreuth Baroque was tremendous! I congratulate you all on this successful premiere under these most difficult circumstances. This festival is a valuable enrichment for the cultural life in Bavaria. I am already looking forward to the next season, in which we will again support those involved as much as we can."

Also, the city of Bayreuth has acknowledged the importance of the new international festival, which has successfully established itself despite this year of crisis. Thomas Ebersberger, Lord Mayor of the City of Bayreuth, says: "Bayreuth Baroque' has had a brilliant start! With opera productions and concerts with the highest artistic quality and the rediscovery plus scientific development of the opera Carlo il Calvo, which has not been performed for almost 300 years, the festival has lived up to dream of building a second festival season at international top level in Bayreuth after the Bayreuth Wagner Festival. This is an absolute win for the cultural city of Bayreuth, and as Lord Mayor, I am happy to help and support the further development of the festival."

In addition to the success on side, our streaming and broadcasts received a great response. One performance of Carlo il Calvo was broadcast live in the Cineplex cinemas in Bayreuth and Mannheim. For those who couldn't get a ticket, mezzo.tv, BR-Klassik and Facebook offered and are still offering the possibility to experience the festival at home and anywhere in the world. These broadcasts were overwhelmingly well received: In the period from  September 8th till 14th, the Bayreuth Baroque Online Edition reached almost 360,000 people via social media, and the festival videos were viewed up to almost 240,000 times.
Multiple broadcasts e.g. in the BR-Mediathek and at mezzo.tv are still planned, more detailed information will be communicated via www.bayreuthbaroque.de/aktuell.

Bayreuth Baroque would like to thank the artists who took their commitment despite the risk, the City of Bayreuth, the Bavarian Culture Fund, the Upper Franconian Foundation for their support and for the staff of the Bayreuth-Hermitage Palace Administration, who provided us with advice, support and solutions for the realization of the festival.
